The 2017 course was the first springtime offering of the course. The weather was mixed, with a few days that required significant use of the wood stove and drying of clothes from wet fieldwork. But, the plants were remarkable, and so were the birds. We caught the ecosystems of the Millard Learning Centre in their full flush of spring energy. We worked on the deer herbivory project, which uses simple (well, mostly simple!) field measurements to assess the impact of deer browsing. I introduced a new project using repeat photography to understand changes on Galiano--more to come in future years. The weather cooperated beautifully for our rowing expedition down the coast. We had some great guest lectures from Suzanne Fournier, Keith Erickson, Risa Smith, Andrew Simon, Mike Hoebel, Tom Mommsen, and Loren Willkinson. Galiano Island is an ecologically and culturally rich place.
